Vaseline Causes Skin Damages Than You Think

When people talk about petroleum jelly, they are usually referring to Vaseline Petroleum Jelly – the product originally refined by Chesebrough. The bitter truth is Vaseline Causes Skin Damages Than You Think. Check your average medicine cabinet, and you are bound to find a jar of Vaseline.

What is Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly)

The history of Vaseline® Jelly starts in 1859, when Robert Chesebrough travelled to Titusville, a small town in Pennsylvania. That’s where oil workers had been using rod wax, an unrefined form of petroleum jelly – then just a simple by-product of the drilling they were working on – to heal wounded or burnt skin.

Curious about its healing benefits, young chemist Robert Chesebrough began to study the substance then known as ‘rod wax’. Through various processes of refinement and purification, he distilled a lighter and transparent gel, which he then patented in 1865 and is the Vaseline Petroleum Jelly we know today.

How Vaseline Does it Work

Vaseline can be found in everything ranging from- lotions to baby products, petroleum jelly works by creating a protective barrier on the skin to hold in moisture. The waterproof barrier it creates on the skin blocks pores and can lock in residue and bacteria. When used on a burn or a sunburn, it locks in heat and can block the body’s ability to heal.

The following reasons makes Vaseline harmful to your skin:

1. It Accelerates Collagen Breakdown

Due to the barrier that Vaseline jelly creates on the skin, it blocks the skin’s ability to breathe and absorb nutrients. This can cause the skin to pull the moisture and nutrients it needs from within, leading to collagen breakdown.

2. It Harbors Harmful Hydrocarbons

Human skin can not metabolize petroleum jelly, so it sits as a barrier on the skin until it wears off. This blocks the body from gaining any benefit from the substance. A 2011 study found strong evidence that the mineral oil hydrocarbons Vaseline contains are “the greatest contaminant of the human body.”

3. It Can Cause Pneumonia

Although this condition is rare, a condition known as lipid pneumonia can occur when small amounts of petroleum jelly are inhaled and build up in the lungs. Because the body can’t metabolize or break down the substance, a severe inflammation in the lungs can occur.

4. It Can Lead To Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen dominance occurs when the body has high levels of estrogen and low levels of progesterone. It has been linked to infertility, menstrual problems, allergies and autoimmune problems. Petroleum jelly contains chemicals called xenoestrogens which are believed to increase estrogen problems.

Instead of using Vaseline there are other sources of Jelly which can enhance skin beauty and natural radiance.

Some of them are: Shea Butter- which is rich in Vitamins A, E and F, ,. It enriches the skin and fights inflammation.

Others are: BeesWax, Coconut Oil, and Cocoa Butter.
